Doujin Overload 2010

Doujin Overload prove to be a big success this year, with roughly 850 attendants to the event.

Dylan Horrocks was present as the guest artist and published graphic novelist, providing custom signed and illustrated copies of his works. We are very grateful that he was able to attend, and there is a possibility that other artists form the New Zealand Comic Collective may attend the event in the future.

A good variety of work was featured this time around, and reflects the growth of the event towards a greater breadth of material. It was previously decided, partially because of severe advertising and marketing issues, that the event name should be changed to "overload". Some have said that this in itself has no meaning... *cough* Armageddon *cough**cough*... but that has not stopped others from doing this to great success.

The name change will take effect from next year, but all advertising material will be marked "Previously known as Doujin Overload" so that the transition is not too sudden. Personally I'd have liked to have kept the old name, but I was out-voted.

I must also look at changing this website to a different format, it a bit too restrictive for what I'd like to do in the future.

Project Gravity: Expansion of Staff

Welcome to those of you wanting to join project gravity.

2009 marks the beginning of a new push into resource production, and the need for voice artists.

3D and 2D animators will also have their place alongside our artists that have recently joined the team.

New artwork is being posted in a staggered state into the gallery. Understand that we cannot post every shot, as that would destroy the magic that comes with trying a demo chapter for the first time.

Doujin Overload 2009

Doujin Overload 2009 is just around the corner on the 25th of July. Nuke-Bloodaxe.Org will be in attendance as per usual, being a sponsor, and will be bringing materials from the current development of the Gravity project.

Thinking of the Gravity project, 3 new images from the introduction have been added to the gallery. Enjoy.

Current Updates + New Server

We are now running on a new server with the following specs:

Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB SATA II 7200RPM 32MB
Shuttle XPC SD30G2
Intel Core 2 DUO E7200 2.53GHz Wolfdale 1066MHz FSB 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Dual Core
G.SKILL 4GB kit
LG GH22NP20 Black 22x IDE Dual Layer DVD Rewriter

So, everyone now has 750Gb to play with. Naturally this is great for photo storage, but also allows for the hosting of very large downloads for projects.

I am currently talking with another artist, and have also added some more sources for music and sound licensing to the Gravity project.

The Novelty Alpha is proceeding very smoothly, and adds some much needed sound to package support that was needed for our licensing requirements. As the art develops some more, I will see about putting together a non-voice demo for testing up.

Right now "Gravity: Under Pressure" is undergoing an extensive re-write to allow for the inclusion of more plot elements. These elements relate to the overall background of the story, and are naturally applicable to any iteration of a Gravity publication.

Doujin Overload 2008

It was a great event, with over 500 to 600 people attending. Present from staff was a Sigil Assault Trooper

For those who took a card, and are wondering what to do, just join the forum; and express your interest in the gravity public discussion thread.

Will a Sigil Assault Trooper be present next year? Hell, yes, I had people all over me wanting photos!

On photos, I will be collecting everything I can get my hands on, and will make a new DO 2008 photo gallery.

In the meantime everyone needs some rest

Regards,
Nuke Bloodaxe.

The Sigil Holder notes:
For those who want to look like a Sigil Assault Trooper, or be one, then please note membership to the "official" Brotherhood of the Sigil is open to those who are willing to join. You'll need to pass a few basic tests first, and be prepared to make a bit of effort, as well as working on the main goal of the Brotherhood. This is not a short-term commitment, but neither is it overwhelming.

VGN Engines & Website Upgrade

ALX from the Blade forum asked if this would be a likely place to ask technical questions about the platform. While I say post in the Blade forum first, I have nothing against people discussing technical aspects in the General VGN forum, so go ahead

The Visual Novel Engine that I quite frankly think will kick the ass off everything out there is the in-development "Novelty - Visual Novel Maker" :
Novelty Sourceforge Site
Novelty discussion thread on Lemma Soft forums.

I've been compiling the different code builds, and I must say its great in its approach.

I've upgraded the dragonfly CMS back end to the latest version, so all things should run slightly faster. I'll also finally get on to putting up more material for you to look at.

For those wondering, I'm feeling much better after the being hit by a car on the zebra crossing incident. Still have a back that plays up rotten, and the left elbow is simply odd, but it looks like one more month and all should be pretty much back to normal.

Gravity: Main Development Period Starts Today

The meeting on the 17th of this month has allowed a bit more co-ordination on what is happening, and we are basically going full-bore from this month.

All artists are now free of their University commitments ( some permanently ), and workplace commitments are dropping in other areas; in the lead up to the New Zealand months of inexplicable country-wide work shut-down ( Late December to late January, followed by lots of public holidays as well ).

For us this means plenty of free development time, writing time, editing time, and debugging time.

Have fun!

Character Development

Studio Hiyaku and Nuke Bloodaxe will be working on character sketches and final drafts for the following:
Claire
Rachel
Merlin
Achilles
Samuel

Variations will follow, and further characters will be selected and drawn up the week after next. Concepts and progress so far will be scanned and featured in the gravity gallery.

Once the characters are in final draft form, digital line drawing and colouration will follow.

Remember, this is a reworking of the material already present into higher quality versions. This shouldn't take as much time as the original conceptual and draft versions I was working on, but they will definitely help when visualizing things.

I expect all characters will be finished by the end of September. This will then be followed by 80+ character scenes that cannot be portrayed using the standard VN sprite system. After that special effects, animated cut scenes, and remaining backgrounds will undergo construction.

Doujin Overload 2007 War-Room Session; VN War-Room Session

Doujin Overload came and went, great event, however we did discover there is no ATM machine for roughly 500 meters around the location site. Anime NZ LTD will be looking into this as a matter of urgency so that this will not be a problem at future events. Possible solutions include the provisioning of cash-out via a mobile Eftpos terminal. Be assured the problem will be addressed.

Nuke-Bloodaxe.Org had an information stand with a small amount of material available to those who were interested in finding out more information about the organization.

One of the biggest problems that has been encountered with VNs is the existence of the rather heavy H scene... this naturally lead to problems at the event with all comers in the know automatically assuming that we were an H house ( along with all the other VN projects )... Those who didn't know saw that all was above board. Nuke Bloodaxe will be coordinating with nomorestars, Evilgeta and Eimin on a more effective strategy to avoid this problem in the future, by promoting the gold sigil as a mark of Nuke-Bloodaxe.Org and therefore the non-H range. This is not about not producing adult titles, we'd just like adult titles we can play anywhere without getting arrested ( somewhat similar to the differences between the ESRBs Mature vs AO ).

Nuke Bloodaxe has the opinion, along with Eimin and nomorestars, that a VN should be able to carry an effective story on it's own without the need to resort to H-scenes. This would allow us greater market share, and possibly make the VN platform more attractive to other developers ( I suspect it's lack of professional adoption by overseas groups is that Walmart has a rather strict view on AO titles... ).

We have a lot of work ahead of us, and it's best to tackle it by confronting the problem now, rather than later. In addition to the gold mark, we will also have other textured and coloured sigil marks indicating the type of title being purchased e.g. Gold Sigil alongside a pounded Iron Sigil meaning a Nuke-Bloodaxe.Org collective group marketing a war story ( with all the character/story development expected of a VN ).
We will avoid marketing junk VNs at all cost ( by junk, meaning really bad art and story-lines ).
